    About the DepartmentTeaching Learning

    About the Department:

    The Department of Botany was established in 1983 as a general course department. Hons. course was introduced during 2008 – 2009 academic session. The main objectives of the department are to offer the students with a basic applied understanding of the subject through innovative teaching, and to outreach on the arrays and processes of life. At present the department comprises of one associate professor, one assistant professor and three state aided college teachers (SACT).The department has well equipped laboratories for both Hons. and General courses.The students of this department are highly enthusiastic, they take active parts in different science fairs and workshops. Faculty members are also engaged in various research activities.Each year more than 60% of the students complete their honours degree course satisfactorily and enter different universities for obtaining higher degree. Many of them have already qualified National Level Eligibility Test (NET) for lectureship/ Junior Research Fellowship exam and are working in renowned National Research Institutes.The main strength of the department is the good-coordination between teaching and nonteaching staff members of the department as well as the healthy student-teacher relationship. The faculty members are always there to help the students in achieving their academic goals, to provide guidance, and to give emotional support when needed.

    Department of Botany has ICT enabled classrooms, well equipped laboratories, and a departmental seminar library. The Department is well equipped with modern equipment’s, the list of which include the following:

    Notable activities:

    The department periodically arranges several internal academic and cultural programs.
    • Organized an UGC-sponsored National Seminar on “Biotechnology for people: Applications and Awareness” December 4-5, 2012, in collaboration with Jalpaiguri Science and Nature Club

    Field work:

    Field work and having practical knowledge are two essential components while studying Botany. Together they offer hands-on learning opportunities that enhance understanding and application of concepts.
