About the department:

Department of Zoology in the college was established in the year 1983. Initially few students got enrolled for the course, the number however, gradually increased as the acceptability and attractiveness of the subject soon became comprehensible. The subject was offered during that time, as an elective subject for B. Sc., General course. Zoology as an ‘Honours’ subject was made available from the year 2005. The department has well-equipped laboratories and modern teaching amenities. Teachers make heavy use of laptops and digital projectors since diagrams and photographs are an integral part of the subject. There is a small library of zoological books in the department which students of zoology can use in addition to central library. Moreover, most teachers provide digital study materials through personal learning management systems.The result of the department has remained satisfactory since its establishment. In the year 2015, one student from the department stood second in the B. Sc. (Honours) examination under University of North Bengal. During past few years, success rate in the final year examinations of Zoology (Honours) remained 100%. Apart from shining in different strata of educational/ administrative/ professional arenas, several alumni of this department have become actively engaged in research activities in different Universities and Research Institutes, many of them have already qualified National Level Eligibility Test (NET) for lectureship/ Junior Research Fellowship or State Level Eligibility Test (SET) exams.

Notable activities performed:

The department periodically arranges several internal academic and cultural programs.
• A workshop on ‘Ornamental Fish Culture’ was arranged on March 28, 2015 in collaboration with the Department of Zoology, University of North Bengal.
• An UGC sponsored national level seminar on “Anthropogenic Toxicant, Green Chemistry, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development: An Interdisciplinary Approach” was organized during March 13-14, 2012. Several renowned personalities in the scientific arena graced the occasion.
• In the year 2004, a national level seminar on biodiversity was organized.
• A state level seminar was also organized.

Field work:

Since the subject of zoology cannot be learnt completely within laboratory, the department arrange excursion for its students on a regular basis.
