    About the department:

The glory of the department of History is as rich as the college itself. Immediately after the Independence, it was in the year 1950, along with the establishment of the college, the department of history began its journey with other departments viz Bengali, English, Philosophy and Political Science. During the period the roll strength of the departments as well as college were only 12. Initially, the department offered B.A. general course to its students. With the passage of time, keeping in mind the growing demand of the learners the department started its honours course with due permission from its affiliating University, e.g. University of North Bengal. Since then, the total number of seats of the department gradually increased and finally reached to 150 in the current academic year. The department is supported by a treasure of books in the college library.
The vision & mission of the department is to help the students to reveal their inner wisdom and to play an instrumental role in establishing themselves in the larger society. That is why apart from regular teaching – learning process the department always encourages the students to participate in NSS, NCC, Sports, culture & others non-academic activities of the college. One of our students called Bhaswati Roychoudhury. participated in the Para-Olympic hosted by Australia in….. As a part of academic activities, the department of history does conduct educational tour in various historical places, visits to museum of surrounding areas etc. The faculty of the department always maintain a cordial relation with the students so that they can easily ventilate their grievances as well as joys.
As the college is situated in a bordering district of Jalpaiguri and a large part of it is covered by several tea gardens and forested areas, so that in every year a good number of students do come from scheduled castes and scheduled tribes to access the opportunity of Higher education. The prominent amongst them was Rita Toto, the first toto tribal girl graduating from the college with honours in history. As part of innovative initiatives, the department of history periodically organises groupdiscussion, special lecture, sometimes seminar & at times academic activities.
